Uncrossing the Wires Behind Phantom Limb Pain

Researchers have combined robotics and neuroscience to find out why amputees still feel pain associated with their missing limbs, opening the gateway to effective treatment options.

Around 185,000 amputations occur in the US every year, followed by a gruelling recovery as amputees adjust to their routines without a limb. One particularly nasty side-effect is phantom limb pain, the chronic sensation of pain radiating from a removed body part.
